Fermira™ RedOil is an oil obtained from Rhodotorula toruloides yeast biomass through a fermentation process. Its lipid fraction consists primarily of triglycerides, with oleic acid as the predominant fatty acid. The ingredient also naturally contains carotenoids, sterols and polyphenols.
In cosmetic formulations, it primarily functions as an emollient. It can enrich the lipid phase of creams, serums, lotions and hair care products, helping to improve softness, smoothness and application properties. Naturally occurring carotenoids give the oil its characteristic red colour, the intensity of which in the finished formulation depends on the use level and the other ingredients present.
In addition to its lipid function, the ingredient has also demonstrated biological activity in in vitro studies. Keratinocyte and fibroblast models have shown effects on the expression of genes associated, among others, with hydration, response to oxidative stress and extracellular matrix remodelling processes. This allows RedOil to be used not only as a component of the oil phase, but also in formulations designed to support anti-ageing skin care and overall skin condition.
Its fermentation-derived origin, distinctive lipid profile and naturally occurring accompanying compounds differentiate it from conventional plant oils.
functional fermentation-derived oil from a controlled European source;
high oleic acid content, with palmitic and linoleic acids also present;
naturally occurring carotenoids, sterols and polyphenols;
combines emollient properties with laboratory-confirmed antioxidant activity;
in vitro data indicate effects on processes associated with hydration, oxidative stress response and skin renewal;
suitable for use in anhydrous formulations and in the oil phase of emulsions;
naturally red in colour, which can be incorporated into the overall product concept.
