General information

Methyltriphenylphosphonium bromide is a phosphonium salt used primarily as a precursor for the phosphorus ylide employed in the Wittig reaction. It enables the conversion of carbonyl compounds into corresponding alkene derivatives, including the introduction of a methylene group.

The product can also be used as a phase-transfer catalyst in selected organic synthesis processes.

Application

Wittig synthesis: Precursor for the reagent used in the methylenation of aldehydes and ketones.

Pharmaceuticals and fine chemicals: Synthesis of intermediates, complex organic molecules, and specialty monomers.

Organic synthesis: Phase-transfer catalyst in appropriately selected reactions conducted in heterogeneous systems.
