Technical parameters – NEOMIN OS

NEOMIN OS is a versatile, 100% pure 2-ethylhexyl stearate. It performs exceptionally well in skin care and make-up formulations. It acts as a highly effective emollient while also efficiently modifying the rheology of cosmetic products — reducing internal friction within the mass, improving formulation flow and significantly facilitating application.

The raw material stands out for its excellent stability and batch-to-batch consistency. It is supplied as a clear, light-coloured liquid with a very low iodine value of max. 2.0 I₂/100 g, which means it is highly resistant to rancidity and oxidation. Its water content of below 0.3% reduces the risk of hydrolysis, thereby helping to extend the shelf life of finished formulations.

NEOMIN OS also ensures safety and predictability during the production process itself. Very strict impurity limits — free stearic acid ≤ 1,000 ppm and 2-ethylhexan-1-ol ≤ 50 ppm — together with stable acid value max. 0.5 mg KOH/g and saponification value of 135–155 mg KOH/g, support trouble-free homogenisation and help protect the structure of the finished emulsion against uncontrolled hydrolysis.

Who is NEOMIN OS for?

  • manufacturers of skin care, white cosmetics and sunscreen products looking for light emollients with high oxidative stability, ● R&D laboratories and contract manufacturers of colour cosmetics aiming to achieve stable and uniform dispersion of mineral pigments in the formulation mass, ● brands focused on “Clean Beauty” that require raw materials with a high natural origin index and RSPO MB availability.

When is the use of NEOMIN OS most justified?

  • reducing the greasiness and viscosity of oil phases – the raw material’s low kinematic viscosity quickly improves the sensory profile of heavy emollient systems, providing fast absorption and a “dry glide” effect without a sticky film

  • requirement for odour stability and resistance to rancidity – an iodine value of ≤ 2.0 g indicates very low susceptibility to oxidation. This enables the development of stable fragrance-free systems and helps protect active ingredients against degradation

  • optimisation of preservative systems in clean beauty formulations – water content of up to 0.3% minimises moisture in the raw material, which limits the risk of microbial growth and facilitates the reduction of synthetic preservatives in the finished formulation

  • implementation of ESG policies and improvement of the natural origin index – as much as 68% of the carbon in the ester structure comes from renewable sources, while RSPO Mass Balance certification supports a lower environmental footprint without compromising quality

Application

IndustryExamples for use
Cosmetics and dermocosmeticsface and body care creams, O/W and W/O emulsions, barrier-supporting products and formulations with a significant oil phase content, make-up products such as foundations, concealers and lipsticks, where glide, application and the sensory profile of the oil phase are important, sunscreen formulations
Technical chemistryindustrial applications as a viscosity reducer, wetting agent and dispersing agent in polymer and technical systems

NEOMIN OS in barrier creams, skin care emulsions and colour cosmetics

In skin care products, it acts as a light emollient that significantly reduces the greasy feel of rich oil phases. It provides fast absorption and a “dry glide” effect without leaving a sticky film on the skin. NEOMIN OS ensures excellent rheological stability of O/W and W/O emulsions across a broad temperature range. Its low iodine value indicates exceptional resistance to oxidation, helping protect sensitive active ingredients and UV filters against degradation and preventing the cosmetic product from rancidity.

In colour cosmetics and sunscreen formulations, NEOMIN OS acts as an effective wetting and dispersing agent for pigments and mineral filters. It helps prevent particle agglomeration, supports even colour distribution, enhances SPF stability and ensures full batch-to-batch consistency.

Additional information

NEOMIN OS – rheological stabilisation and an ideal sensory profile for cosmetic formulations

Choosing NEOMIN OS ester helps shorten homogenisation time during production, eliminate the risk of base oxidation and significantly increase the natural origin index of the formulation, while ensuring an excellent application experience for the consumer.

Sensory synergy and viscosity control of the oil phase

The incorporation of NEOMIN OS into a formulation directly affects the rheology of the oil phase during mixing and component dosing. The low kinematic viscosity of this ester enables significant modification of heavy and sticky lipid systems. In laboratory and production practice, this means faster achievement of a homogeneous structure, helping to shorten the homogenisation cycle of each batch.

The raw material’s consistent physicochemical parameters help protect the system against pH fluctuations, eliminating the need for continuous adjustments on the production line.

Protection against rancidity and optimisation of preservative systems

NEOMIN OS is characterised by extremely high oxidative stability. The saturated structure of its carbon chains means that the ester is highly resistant to degradation and oxidation caused by aeration during phase addition or exposure to high process temperatures. This helps prevent unpleasant odour formation and colour changes in the formulation mass, enabling the safe design of fragrance-free systems without the need for synthetic antioxidants or high levels of masking fragrances.

In addition, the strict refining regime limits the water content in the raw material to a maximum of 0.3%, helping reduce conditions favourable to microbial growth and supporting the development of cosmetics with reduced preservative content.

Dispersion stabilisation in colour cosmetics and SPF formulations

in formulations containing pigments, such as foundations, lipsticks and SPF products, NEOMIN OS effectively coats solid particles and significantly reduces interfacial tension. This helps prevent the agglomeration, or clumping, of titanium dioxide, zinc oxide and iron oxides.

Thanks to the uniform dispersion of particles in the continuous phase, the formulation gains a smooth, refined appearance and improved rheological stability. In sunscreen products, this helps prevent streaking and supports the repeatability of the declared SPF factor in every batch. In colour cosmetics, it enables precise and uniform colour payoff while maintaining a light, almost dry glide during application to the skin.

Frequently asked questions from our customers about NEOMIN OS

We have compiled answers to the most common questions regarding the physicochemical parameters, purity and behaviour of the ester under process conditions. Explore the technical details of NEOMIN OS.

  • No. Thanks to a strict refining regime, the water content in the raw material is limited to a maximum of 0.3% by the Karl Fischer method. Such a minimal level of free moisture naturally prevents the growth and proliferation of microorganisms. This removes the need for routine incoming microbiological testing and, in the finished product, helps technologists safely reduce the concentration of synthetic preservatives in line with the clean beauty trend.
  • NEOMIN OS is characterised by very low kinematic viscosity, which makes it an effective viscosity reducer and rheology modifier. When incorporated into a formulation, it reduces internal resistance and significantly modifies the sensory profile of heavy, sticky lipid systems. As a result, rich emulsions, both O/W and W/O, absorb faster and gain a so-called “dry glide” effect without leaving a sticky film on the skin.
  • The raw material ensures full predictability and chemical stability during mechanical processing. Its consistent parameters — an acid value of max. 0.5 mg KOH/g and a saponification value in the range of 135–155 mg KOH/g — support neutrality within the system. This helps protect the emulsion structure against uncontrolled hydrolysis and pH fluctuations, reducing the risk of having to stop the production line to make rheological adjustments in the vessel.
  • No. The raw material demonstrates exceptional oxidative stability. It does not degrade or oxidise under aeration during production or exposure to high process temperatures. This helps prevent rancidity of the lipid base, the formation of off-odours and colour changes, allowing formulators to reduce the need for high doses of antioxidants or masking fragrances.
