Technical Parameters– TuriKer®

TuriKer® is a range of turkey-derived keratin protein hydrolysates. The powdered TuriKer® variants are characterized by a protein content of ≥69%, dry matter content of ≥93%, a pH of 6.5–7.5, and high water solubility.

A key distinguishing feature of the range is its diverse molecular weight profiles – from the smallest fractions below 1,000 Da to a variant covering the full spectrum of amino acids, peptides, and polypeptides. This allows the TuriKer® profile to be selected according to the formulation type and desired performance direction, while maintaining the same INCI name: Hydrolyzed Keratin.

General information

TuriKer® is a range of turkey-derived β-keratin hydrolysates available in five molecular weight profiles, from fractions below 1,000 Da to a full spectrum of amino acids, peptides, and polypeptides. This makes it possible to select the most suitable variant according to the formulation type and desired performance profile – from lighter conditioning to more surface-oriented film-forming effects.

Application

Hydrolyzed Keratin can provide hair- and skin-conditioning, film-forming, antistatic, and humectant functions in cosmetic formulations. TuriKer® is primarily intended for hair and skin care products, while selected profiles may also be used in nail care, dermocosmetics, pet skin and coat care products, and fabric care applications.

The choice of application should take into account the molecular weight profile and the characteristics of the target formulation.

Application area

Formulation direction

Hair care rinse-off (shampoos)

Conditioning, antistatic and film-forming effects, depending on the selected molecular weight profile and formulation base..

Hair care rinse-off (masks, conditioners)

Conditioning and smoothing; higher molecular weight fractions may be considered where a more surface-oriented film-forming effect is desired.

Hair care leave-on & styling

Smoothing, surface film formation and improved hair sensory properties, depending on the selected profile and formulation.

Dermocosmetics

Selected profiles for skin care formulations, particularly where conditioning and film-forming properties are relevant.

Pet care

Selected profiles for products designed to support animal skin and coat care.

Nail care

Selected profiles for nail care formulations.

The selection of the TuriKer® profile and use level should be validated in the final formulation..

Additional information

Why does molecular weight profile matter? The two-level TurEssence® concept

Not all hydrolyzed keratins behave in the same way within a formulation. Their potential interaction with the hair fibre depends, among other factors, on the molecular weight profile, formulation composition, and degree of hair damage. TuriKer® offers the possibility to select a keratin hydrolysate with a defined fraction profile – from the smallest peptides below 1,000 Da to larger fractions and a full spectrum of amino acids, peptides, and polypeptides.

The TurEssence® concept is based on this distinction: rather than treating Hydrolyzed Keratin as a single universal ingredient, it makes it possible to leverage the complementary properties of fractions with different molecular weights

Smaller peptides and amino acids – potential for deeper interaction

Published studies on keratin hydrolysates indicate that lower molecular weight fractions may have a greater potential to penetrate the hair fibre than higher molecular weight molecules. This is particularly relevant for porous, bleached, and damaged hair. More permeable areas of the cuticle may facilitate the interaction of smaller peptides with deeper regions of the damaged fibre.

Larger keratin fractions – surface and film-forming effects

As molecular weight increases, surface activity becomes more significant. Larger keratin hydrolysate fractions may adsorb onto the hair cuticle and support the formation of a thin film. From a formulation perspective, this can be leveraged in products designed to improve smoothness, reduce roughness and friction, and enhance the sensory properties of the hair.

Two modes of action – one formulation concept

TurEssence® combines both approaches: smaller fractions with the potential for deeper interaction and larger fractions acting primarily at the hair surface.

This gives formulators the flexibility to select the most appropriate TuriKer® profile for a specific brief – from lightweight conditioning for porous hair to more pronounced surface and film-forming effects.

TuriKer® is derived from β-keratin sourced from turkey feathers within a controlled European production chain. Using this protein source to produce a functional cosmetic ingredient also aligns with the concept of upcycling.

The final performance of TuriKer® depends on the selected profile, use level, and overall formulation and should be confirmed through application testing.

TuriKer® – frequently asked questions

Below, we have compiled answers to the most common questions about molecular weight profiles, applications, and working with TuriKer® hydrolysates. The selection of the appropriate variant and the performance of the final formulation should always be confirmed through application testing.

  • TuriKer® is available in five molecular weight profiles – from <1,000 Da to a full-spectrum profile – while sharing the same INCI name: Hydrolyzed Keratin. This allows formulators to select the most suitable variant according to the intended application and formulation objective.
  • Lower molecular weight fractions may be a suitable starting point. Smaller peptides may have greater potential to interact with more porous areas of the damaged hair fibre. The selection of a specific variant should be verified in the final formulation.
  • For this purpose, variants containing larger keratin fractions are worth considering. Their activity is primarily focused on the hair surface, where they may support film formation, improve smoothness, and help reduce roughness and friction.
  • Yes. The TurEssence® concept is based on the complementary properties of fractions with different molecular weights. Lower molecular weight fractions can be combined with larger fractions to design formulations that address both the more porous regions of the hair fibre and its surface. The final combination and use levels should be confirmed through application testing.
