Technical parameters – EWALAN 30-PA

EWALAN 30-PA is a technologically advanced, pharmaceutical-grade anhydrous wool wax with a unique lipid profile rich in high-molecular-weight esters, aliphatic alcohols and sterols. In modern dermocosmetic and pharmaceutical formulations, it functions as a biomimetic penetration enhancer and a highly effective water-in-oil (W/O) emulsifier. Its performance is based on the physicochemical reduction of interfacial tension, which supports the rapid binding of the aqueous phase during mass homogenisation.

Thanks to rigorous refining and its “Extra Pale” classification, with a Gardner colour value of 6–8, the material helps eliminate aesthetic compromises in formulation development. It enables the creation of a snow-white, stable and visually uniform mass. After application to the skin, EWALAN 30-PA forms a plastic, biomimetic occlusive layer that mimics the natural epidermal barrier. These properties are directly linked to its physical parameters: a melting point of 38–44°C and a documented, enhanced water absorption capacity of at least 30 mL. Together, these characteristics significantly reduce the risk of syneresis, or phase separation, and may help shorten processing time in production environments.

EWALAN 30-PA undergoes a specialised thermal deodorisation process, resulting in a very low, almost imperceptible odour profile. The use of this lanolin grade can therefore reduce or eliminate the need for fragrance compositions used solely to mask the base odour. In addition, the strict control of pesticide residues, with a total limit of max. 1.0 ppm, including organochlorine pesticides below 0.05 ppm, together with the minimisation of free wool alcohols, significantly reduces the irritation potential and supports an optimised safety profile of the finished product. Its high oxidative stability, expressed by a peroxide value of max. 10 meq O₂/kg, also helps protect sensitive active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) incorporated into the system against premature degradation throughout the product’s shelf life.

EWALAN 30-PA in pharmacy-compounded ointments and advanced dermocosmetic formulations

In skin care and therapeutic preparations, EWALAN 30-PA acts as a key occlusive and structure-forming agent, influencing epidermal physiology immediately after application. Its presence in the formulation helps visibly reduce transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and significantly improves the elasticity of the stratum corneum. Through the targeted action of wool wax, the lipid barrier structure is biomimetically supported after application, while the formulation itself gains high emulsion stability across a broad temperature range.

The raw material is fully compliant with Ph. Eur. and JP monographs. Thanks to its documented water absorption capacity of at least 30 mL, EWALAN 30-PA provides an exceptionally stable W/O base for systems containing APIs, making it a strong foundation for dermatological medicines, including ointments for psoriasis and eczema, transdermal systems and ophthalmic ointments. In addition, its low peroxide value of max. 10 meq O₂/kg helps protect sensitive active substances against oxidation and degradation.

Stabilisation of fragrance-free formulations and toxicological purity in products for atopic and psoriasis-prone skin

This raw material is particularly relevant in the development of fragrance-free systems and hypoallergenic formulations. Such formulations require a very high level of toxicological purity, and EWALAN 30-PA supports the desired safety profile without the need to introduce synthetic rheology modifiers or artificial fragrance compositions intended to mask the odour of the base. This helps reduce the risk of poor product acceptance among demanding consumers with atopic dermatitis-prone or psoriasis-prone skin.

EWALAN 30-PA provides long-lasting occlusion and supports the reduction of transepidermal water loss (TEWL). Its very low pesticide residue limit, max. 1 ppm, together with the controlled level of free potentially irritating wool alcohols, supports safe use in formulations intended for compromised or sensitive skin. Advanced deodorisation also helps eliminate the need for potentially allergenic fragrance compositions used solely to mask the base odour.

This purity profile is also important in maternity and baby care applications, where the formulation may come into direct contact with delicate skin, mucous membranes or the infant’s oral area. The raw material forms a semi-permeable protective film that helps prevent excessive skin maceration in diaper rash creams and nipple care ointments. For projects requiring the complete elimination of antioxidants, a related grade is available: EWALAN 35-PA-S (BHT-Free).

Emulsification efficiency in W/O systems and protection against syneresis

In traditional water-in-oil (W/O) emulsion systems, this wool wax actively supports the efficient incorporation and binding of the aqueous phase, with a minimum water absorption capacity of 300% relative to its own weight. In practice, this translates into a clear improvement in the physicochemical stability of the emulsion, helping protect the system against syneresis, or water droplet separation, while maintaining a flawless, snow-white appearance and the desired smoothness of the finished product.

These properties make the raw material particularly suitable for colour cosmetics and specialist skin care applications, including luxury lip balms, protective lip sticks, rich body butters and sunscreen formulations. It acts as an excellent adhesion promoter, improving product adherence and extending residence time on the lips or skin, while delivering a strong, aesthetically pleasing gloss. It also supports the effective dispersion of pigments and physical UV filters, helping prevent particle agglomeration or graininess in the finished product.

For the clean beauty and premium natural cosmetics segment, this raw material creates a bridge between a 100% natural, renewable and cruelty-free ingredient and the parameter consistency typically associated with synthetic raw materials. It allows premium brands to build a credible sustainability narrative without compromising physical stability, viscosity profile or sensory performance.

Who is EWALAN 30-PA for?

  • Manufacturers of luxury skin care products, including creams, facial emulsions and premium white cosmetics.

  • R&D formulation laboratories and contract manufacturers of dermatological medicines, including pharmacy-compounded ointments and transdermal systems.

  • Brands developing dermocosmetic lines for atopic dermatitis-prone, eczema-prone and extremely sensitive skin.

  • Manufacturers requiring the highest pharmacopoeial purity of raw materials, including premium Ph. Eur. grades.

When is the use of EWALAN 30-PA particularly justified?

  • when an exceptionally white mass is required - EWALAN 30-PA is an “Extra Pale” grade wool wax. Thanks to its intensive lightening and refining process, it does not impart the unwanted yellowish tone that is often associated with lower-grade lanolins. This makes it suitable for visually premium, bright and elegant bases, including crystalline or white emulsion systems.

  • when odour neutrality is critical - this raw material is characterised by a very low, almost imperceptible odour profile. It is particularly valuable in hypoallergenic and fragrance-free formulations, where the typical odour of traditional lanolin may be rejected by marketing or sensory teams, and where the use of fragrance compositions to mask the base odour is not desirable.

  • when intensive support of the epidermal barrier is required - EWALAN 30-PA is highly suitable for therapeutic and barrier ointments designed to reduce transepidermal water loss (TEWL). It forms a semi-permeable, biomimetic occlusive layer on the skin, helping imitate the protective function of natural human skin lipids.

  • when strict toxicological audits and regulatory registration are involved - the selection of this grade supports demanding quality and toxicological assessments. Its documented, significantly reduced pesticide content, below pharmacopoeial limits, together with confirmation of the absence of mutagenic substances, helps address quality control concerns related to the potential systemic absorption of contaminants through compromised skin.

  • when stabilising dense W/O systems is a priority - EWALAN 30-PA performs as a reliable W/O emulsifying agent with excellent water absorption capacity. It supports efficient homogenisation during production and helps protect the mass against phase separation and syneresis

Additional information

EWALAN 30-PA: Extra Pale EP Wool Wax — a reliable emulsifier and emollient for luxury skin care formulations

EWALAN 30-PA anhydrous lanolin is a highly purified, pharmaceutical-grade wool wax, classified as premium Ph. Eur. It is a key component in modern therapeutic ointments, barrier creams and dermocosmetic formulations. In formulations designed for the highest sensory quality, its presence supports long-term emulsion stability and provides a deep occlusive effect, without compromising the appearance or odour profile of the finished mass.

Biomimetic occlusion – control of the epidermal barrier and  TEWL

EWALAN 30-PA takes advantage of its strong natural affinity with human epidermal lipids, making it a valuable foundation for specialised barrier systems. Damage to the stratum corneum and deficiencies in the intercellular lipid matrix require targeted protection against transepidermal water loss (TEWL).

Unlike synthetic mineral oils or petrolatum, which may form a fully occlusive and heavy film on the skin, EWALAN 30-PA creates a semi-permeable, biomimetic protective layer. As a result, it helps smooth the epidermis, reduce the feeling of roughness and support the regeneration of compromised skin. This natural compatibility translates into genuine user comfort — the skin remains moisturised without a heavy or overloaded feel.

Rheological stability and optimisation of W/O systems

Pharmacopoeial lanolin plays a dual role in the formulation: it is not only a powerful emollient, but also a key thermodynamic stabiliser. Its concentration in the product directly determines the water absorption capacity, >30 mL, as well as the physicochemical properties of the system.

During processing, EWALAN 30-PA effectively reduces interfacial tension, enabling the smooth formation of dense, highly stable water-in-oil emulsions (W/O systems). This is particularly important in large-scale production, where the raw material helps maintain viscosity reproducibility, significantly reduces the risk of syneresis, or phase separation, and supports optimisation of homogenisation time.

Application in luxury white cosmetics and clean beauty formulations

Conventional technical lanolin waxes often have a yellowish tone and a distinctive animal-derived odour. EWALAN 30-PA, classified as an “Extra Pale” fraction, is designed to overcome these limitations. Subjected to a rigorous lightening process and thermal deodorisation, it is characterised by an exceptionally light colour, close to translucent white, and a very low odour profile.

It functions as a neutral base, enabling the use of lanolin in luxury white creams and facial emulsions where marketing and sensory teams may reject the need to mask the base with strong fragrance compositions. The high level of purification of EWALAN 30-PA also helps reduce the risk of yellowing caused by oxidation and light exposure.

Toxicological purity – safety for sensitive skin

The high performance of EWALAN 30-PA is directly linked to its uncompromising level of purification, confirmed by compliance with the European Pharmacopoeia (Ph. Eur.). The raw material is free from mutagenic substances, as supported by its CMR declaration, while advanced refining technology reduces the level of organochlorine pesticides to trace values, below 0.05 ppm.

In addition, the content of potentially irritating free wool alcohols is significantly reduced. This supports the use of EWALAN 30-PA in formulations for newborn care, atopic dermatitis-prone skin and ointments intended for compromised skin, without adding unnecessary toxicological burden to the finished product.

EWALAN 30-PA – frequently asked questions

When developing advanced dermocosmetic and pharmaceutical formulations, the consistency of raw material parameters, colour profile and thermodynamic stability are of critical importance. Below, we address the key R&D challenges associated with the use of high-grade lanolin.

  • The raw material reaches its highest effectiveness in dense water-in-oil (W/O) emulsions, luxury barrier creams and preparations for compromised skin, including atopic dermatitis-prone skin. Due to its strict “Extra Pale” colour classification, it is particularly valuable in the development of snow-white cosmetic masses, where conventional lanolin could compromise the final product by imparting an unwanted yellowish tone.
  • Pharmaceutical-grade lanolin acts as a powerful co-emulsifier within the system. EWALAN 30-PA has a documented enhanced water absorption capacity of at least 30 mL. By effectively reducing interfacial tension, it significantly accelerates the binding of the aqueous phase during homogenisation, thereby helping minimise the risk of syneresis, or phase separation, throughout the product’s shelf life.
  • No. Unlike conventional, less refined wool waxes, EWALAN 30-PA undergoes an advanced thermal deodorisation process. As a result, it has a very low odour profile. From a formulation perspective, this means there is no need to mask the base with strong fragrance compositions, which is particularly important in hypoallergenic formulations.
  • Yes. EWALAN 30-PA is a wool wax with an exceptionally high toxicological purity profile, in which the level of potentially irritating free wool alcohols has been significantly reduced compared with standard technical-grade materials. It is supported by full documentation confirming the absence of mutagenic substances, covered by the CMR declaration, as well as an extremely low level of pesticide residues: total pesticide limit max. 1 ppm, including organochlorine pesticides below 0.05 ppm. These values are significantly below standard market requirements.
  • This optimisation is strategically justified when marketing teams require impeccable visual aesthetics, such as a clean white cream, and the finished product is positioned as a luxury premium dermocosmetic. It is also an important step for projects requiring uncompromising oxidative stability and certification in line with the highest medical standards, including Ph. Eur. Compliance.
